Trends in Backflow Prevention Valve Selection & Location – New Engineering Resource Guide Published

Safe-T-Cover announces the release of a new resource for engineers and executives responsible for commercial water supply and infrastructure

Online PR News – 30-March-2016 – Its been happening under our noses, or actually under our feet, but hasnt been widely discussed. Over the last several years municipalities and water purveyors have been evolving their standards for backflow prevention valves on commercial facilities.

The evolving guidelines are increasingly conservative – assigning higher risk profiles to applications and requiring reduced pressure zone (RPZ) type backflow prevention assemblies (BPA) for more applications.

There are several contributing factors, including:
Increased awareness of backflow situations through AMI data
Growing attention to conservation and environmental concerns
Awareness regarding potential cross connection risks with traditional double check assembly (DCA) type BPAs

And as attention focuses on the type of BPA that raises secondary questions regarding the optimal location. Water purveyors, civil engineers, building owners, contractors, fire departments, mechanical engineers and insurance underwriters are all increasingly attentive to the location of valves.

But the body of best practice knowledge has mostly just been passed anecdotally within water districts. At Safe-T-Cover we hear snippets from districts all over the country, and we realized these were wide scale trends. So we undertook to create a resource which would help anyone in the commercial plumbing and waterworks communities find a consolidated overview of these trends in a single guide.

“Were thrilled to release our new guide,” says Craig Carmon, president of Safe-T-Cover. Weve literally spent more than three years researching these trends nationwide. Weve collected input from regulators, purveyors, inspectors, civil and mechanical engineers, attorneys, underwriters, contractors and more. This is the first consolidated reference were aware of regarding these trends in backflow prevention assembly selection and location.

The 15 page illustrated guide covers key topics including:
Water supply safety
Types of backflow
Types of valves
Approaches to backflow management
Design risks
Use cases
Regulations and guidelines
Common installation locations
Trends
Liability and risk considerations

“The default location used to be a mechanical room or vault,” adds Carmon. But theres awareness growing that those locations are often poorly suited as the valve selection evolves. Todays valve specifications increasingly require above grade exterior placement rather than in vaults which often flood, or mechanical rooms where the RPZ drain requirements are simply impractical.

This guide is designed for anybody whos specifying, buying, testing or relying on a commercial supply backflow prevention valve. It takes the reader through the changes, background rationale and factors, and the implications to their existing and future projects.

Randy Holland, Safe-T-Covers expert resource for water authorities and the civil & plumbing engineering community adds, I speak almost weekly with engineering teams at water districts and consulting firms. Im amazed that as common as these trends are, theres been no common resource. Im really excited to bring this guide to the community. Between this BPA trends handbook and our program to help water districts create standard design details, were taking the lead in empowering the professionals that are entrusted with water conservation and safety.

The BPA selection and location engineering resource guide is available for download at http://offers.safe-t-cover.com/trends-in-backflow-prevention-valve-selection. Water districts, engineers and others interested distributing this guide to their teams should contact Craig Carmon to discuss options.

About Safe-T-Cover: Safe-T-Cover helps engineers and municipalities protect important industrial equipment and water infrastructure. Were engineers by training and temperament and we come to work each day to help engineers create the ideal solution to their protection requirements. In addition to helping water purveyors develop standard details to simplify implementation of new approaches, our custom orientation, and modular system, mean that we are able to provide pricing, drawings and specs on custom enclosures within a couple days. And by helping you design the perfect enclosure for your requirements, well help you save big over time.

New WORX TURBINEFUSION Blower/Mulcher/Bagger Packs Punch in Fall…

New WORX TURBINEFUSION Blower/Mulcher/Bagger Packs Punch in Fall…

WORX TURBINEFUSION Blower/Mulcher/Bagger

This jet-inspired yard tool develops up to 525 cubic-feet-per-minute air volume at air speeds as high as 65 mph to create a powerhouse blower/mulcher/bagger with an all-in-one, single-tube design.

Based on jet propulsion technology, the new WORX® TURBINEFUSION Blower/Mulcher/Bagger combines massive air volume (cubic feet per minute) with a patented axial fan motor design to quickly and completely round up heavy accumulations of fallen leaves and debris, even when wet. Also, the versatile, all-in-one yard machine automatically converts into a yard vacuum and leaf mulcher by simply attaching the included leaf collection bag.

“The TURBINEFUSION is a one-size-fits-all Blower/Mulcher/Bagger that features an industry leading 24:1 mulch ratio,” said Brandon Martin, WORX Product Manager. “The hassles of keeping up with spare vac tubes have been completely eliminated, providing a seamless and easy operation for the user – from blasting leaves across the lawn, to vacuuming, pulverizing and bagging them into fine mulch.”

The 9.7-lb. TURBINEFUSION Blower/Mulcher/Bagger owes its leaf-clearing prowess to a powerful, 12-amp, axial fan motor. Air is pulled directly into the motor’s fan and immediately forced out through a large-diameter blower tube.

This jet-inspired yard tool develops up to 525 cfm (cubic-feet-per-minute) air volume at air speeds as high as 65 mph to create a powerhouse blower/mulcher/bagger with an all-in-one, single-tube design. The two-speed machine also produces a gentler air stream for blowing sensitive areas, such as garden beds, over pea gravel, inside garages or sheds and on patios or decks.

Snap on the 0.75-bushel, leaf-collection bag, and the TURBINEFUSION blower automatically converts to a mulcher/vac. It’s one of the only blower/mulcher/baggers on the market that doesn’t require a kit or tools to transition from blower to mulcher/vac functions.

The innovative yard machine boasts a two-stage, metal-impeller, mulching system with an industry-leading 24-to-1 ratio. This means 24 bags of leaves are whittled down to only one bag that needs to be lugged to the curb or used in flower beds. It saves time, energy and cost of municipal bags and/or stickers.

In stage one, leaves and debris are reduced by a high-velocity, metal shredder blade. In stage two, a second metal impeller pulverizes the material into fine mulch. Emptying the leaf-collection bag is as simple as pressing a lever to detach it from the yard tool.

The TURBINEFUSION Blower/Mulcher/Bagger is constructed of high-impact nylon composite and is ergonomically designed and balanced for single-handed operation.

The optional WORX LeafPro™ Universal Collection System is a great accessory to TURBINEFUSION, as well as other major brands of blower/mulcher/baggers. This handy leaf disposal system connects with an adapter to one end of Leaf Pro’s 4-inch-diameter, industrial grade flexible hose. The hose is 8 ft. long and has a total diameter reach of 16 ft.

The other end of the hose is attached to an elastic, nylon cover that adjusts to fit snugly over the rim of a 32 to 96-gallon outdoor waste container, and then is cinch-tied. Turn on the vac, and the container is filled with mulched leaves for easy disposal or composting.

The TURBINEFUSION Blower/Mulcher/Bagger (WG510, $89.99) is available at http://www.worx.com and other online retailers, including Walmart and Amazon. It is backed by the WORX three-year warranty. The WORX LeafPro Universal Collection System for TURBINEFUSION (WA4057, $39.99) will be available in October at http://www.worx.com.

Scott’s Heating & Air Conditioning Offers Solutions to Common AC Problems

Scott’s Heating & Air Conditioning Offers Solutions to Common AC Problems

Scott’s Heating & Air Conditioning Offers Solutions to Common AC Problems

On average, the typical AC system lasts about 12 years. Scott Air wants Orlando homewoners to know that not every system malfunction requires a pricy fix.

Online PR News – 22-June-2016 – Every homeowner knows that air conditioning systems dont last forever (12 years on average) and the moment the AC fails is usually when you need it the most, especially in the middle of a Florida summer!

Scotts Heating & Air Conditioning, one of Central Floridas leading AC companies, wants you to know that not every system malfunction needs a pricy fix. Many problems are DIY or can be handled by the pros at Scott Air.

Heres a list of common air conditioning warning signs, their likely causes and fixes:

1.AC Wont Turn On Sometimes the most likely culprit is the easiest to fix — the thermostat isnt set correctly, or power isnt reaching the AC unit. Make sure that the thermostat is set to AC or cool, that the temperature setting is correct, and that the battery is fresh. Second, check the circuit breaker — it could simply be a tripped fuse.
2.AC is Not Cool Enough — If you arent comfortable, the problem usually can be traced to issues with airflow. The first thing to do is change the filter which you should be doing every 30-60 days as a part of regular maintenance anyway. Next, on the outside unit, make sure theres at least 24 inches of clearance on the sides and 5 feet on top of the unit. Also, check to make sure there are no obstructions to the homes air vents.
3.Utility Bills are Abnormally High — A spike in operating costs typically signals inefficient operation. After a dirty filter, the most likely culprit is a choked condensing coil. Located within the outdoor unit, the coil has countless cooling fins much like a car radiator that can accumulate dust and debris. You may need to call Scott Air for a tune-up.
4.Weird Noises During Operation Do you hear a rattle or ticking when the AC is turned on? It might be little more than a loose screw or could be caused by a broken blower motor (inside) or bent fan blade (outdoors). If youre lucky, a simple tightening here and lubricating there will fix the problem. If not, you might require a new fan motor or fan blade.
5.The Air Coming Out of the Vents Doesnt Feel as Cold as it Used to The Possible cause of this problem is the refrigerant lines arent insulated. The outdoor unit is connected to the indoor system by two copper refrigerant lines, which should be covered with insulating sleeves. Make sure that they are. Also, the system may need its refrigerant re-charged.
6.The AC Unit will not turn on at all This is more than likely a burnt-out compressor. The only fix for this is a replacement of the equipment, which includes various small parts, new Freon, and labor.

We can usually repair an air conditioning system to help extend its life, however, there may come a time when you need to replace with a new system it in order to avoid spending more money on repairs from year to year, said Scott, president and founder. When that time arrives, our experts consider factors such as size, shape, and orientation of your home, to determine the perfect system for your home. Our no pressure, no obligation quote will include all the elements needed to complete the job so you know exactly what youre getting and exactly what it will cost with no surprises.
